The location of the mill was chosen for a variety of reasons, according to Rayonier, among which being located in one of the best tree growing regions in the world is one of them. A second reason is being close to a great source of water as is needed in the manufacturing of highly purified (food and pharmaceutical grade) dissolving cellulose. The Floridian Aquifer is one of the largest groundwater sources available. Another necessary component of choosing a location for the mill is a great transportation network - road, rail, and deep-water port infrastructure, all of which Fernandina has available. The picture attached HERE shows Rayonier's pulp being loaded on a freighter at the mill warehouse. The mill was constructed in part to service the rayon tire cord market in Japan and the warehouse dock was the primary loading point for this outlet. The entire water front, from the Rayonier mill to RockTenn mill is assumed to have been used at some point for freight loading. The northern portion of Rayonier property was used for phosphate loading before Rayonier bought the property.
